Dr. Alyshia Gálvez, assistant professor of Latin American, Latino and Puerto Rican Studies at Lehman College, shared excerpts from her book, Patient Citizens, Immigrant Mothers: Mexican Women, Public Prenatal Care, and the Birth Weight Paradox, on December 6, 2012. The book is an ethnographic examination of the Latina health paradox, in which Mexican immigrant women have less complicated pregnancies and more favorable birth outcomes than other groups, despite socioeconomic disadvantages.
