Lehman College is named after Herbert H. Lehman, who served as the governor (1933 – 1942) and the senator (1950 – 1957) of New York.  He was committed to the common good. He believed that the role and responsibility of government was to look after those who desperately needed help and could not help themselves; children, the elderly, the poor, the disabled, and victims of oppression.

The college community continues his quest today by speaking out for those less fortunate in an international event called, “Take Back the Night.” This event raises awareness on assault, domestic violence, dating violence, sexual abuse and all other forms of sexual violence with hopes to end the silence within our community.
